Here I Am at Pearson

Here I am at Pearson International Airport in Toronto, waiting for my flight to San Francisco. You’ll be happy to hear that I finally settled on my vacation reading material. I visited Mother Tongue Bookstore where my poet friend M. works. Mother Tongue is only a few blocks from my apartment, yet this was only my second visit in my three years living here. Isn’t that always the way that one often doesn’t frequent the businesses that are closest?

Anyway, my flight bag now holds The Breaker by Minette Walters and Shelter by Jayne Anne Phillips. I’m a sucker for British mystery and I’ve never read Walters, so I’m looking forward to that (I picked one with an ocean theme). Shelter was recommended to me by Rick Taylor several years ago, because it reminded him of my short story “Fuel”, which is also set at a summer camp. Shelter takes place in a West Virginian Girl Guide camp in 1963. Lots of descriptions of sweltering heat, just what I need.

“Now boarding, United Airlines flight 755 to San Francisco”.
