I met artist Marjory Mejia by chance at the World Domination Summit in Portland. Sparked by the word written on her chest at the time, we immediately launched into an intense discussion about flow all during lunch.
Her wood veneer business card, printed on one side with the Womb of Life Mandala, is one of my Truth and Beauty Totems, and travels with me in a special pocket of my backpack.
We’ve stayed in touch since then, and in honour of Marjory unveiling her new website design, I asked her to come by today and talk about retreat and flow and putting yourself out into the world. Welcome, Marjory!
Alison, thanks for the kind invitation to be here on a special day dear to my heart, the Winter Solstice, and the birth of my new space! Your support means the world to me.
The last time we spoke, you talked about how your move from the San Francisco Bay area to Miami had been a kind of retreat and transition for you. Can you tell me more about how the shift from California to Florida affected your creative process and the art you are making?
I came to a land of sunshine, moisture and fluidity that invited me to dive deep into the body of my work. My labor of love became what I breathed, ate and dreamed with! I hired a fabulous coach who helped me see and harvest the gems of my work.
Coming to Miami allowed me to focus my work in a new way. I excavated the gifts that I had already been offering, but kept hidden. My time in Miami has been a retreat of sorts to fine tune my song in service of awakening sacred flow in the spaces and lives of many.
You left a corporate job in 2009 to spend all of your time on writing, art, and consulting. Tell me a little of that story: how did you come to the decision to leave, and what impact did you notice afterward?
I had no choice. Working in sustainable design firms was stimulating but ultimately missing the depth, artistry and soul that my spirit was yearning for, my true body of work. I was craving the sacred and no job on earth could offer that because I had to create it for myself.
Making the leap into my dream filled me with the most delicious sense to freedom to explore my callings and soul promptings. They needed to take center stage to be fully developed and shine in all their glory.
Alright, flow sister, tell me what flow means to you. Why do you love flow and how do you open yourself wider to flow in your life and work?
I have always had an affinity, disposition, love for flow. Since a child playing with the sacred earth in my hands, I could feel the pulse, the rhythm of the earth. My love for flow in Literature unraveled itself naturally, inspired by writers who liberated their soul on the page, unbridled, unapologetic, unrestrained.
This same flow found a way to be recognized and expressed in Architecture. The flow of energy through form, form that shapes our experience of life. Flow to me is energy, consciousness, freedom of motion, of creativity, of being in the light of your true nature.
How do I open to flow? I open my heart to the beauty around and I find myself deep listening to my own rhythm dancing with the rhythm of the world. I accept the invitation of nature to surrender to this current bigger than life. Natural spaces of high vibration (inner and outer) let inspiration flood in. From this space, I create and say yes.
Today you are launching your new website, which you designed yourself. How have you found the experience of putting yourself and your work out into the world?
The experience of designing my own website wasn’t planned, like the best things in life, it kind of happened on its own, when everything else didn’t come into fruition, the universe was nudging me to craft my own vision. I have also been blessed with incredibly gifted collaborators to make my new site a reality.
The experience of putting myself out there has been an edge, an adventure, a realization, an emerging into the light of my true being.
We artists often make our work first and foremost to please ourselves, but our audience must find it interesting and useful in order to connect and buy it. How do you see your art as serving the world?
My art stems from an impulse to create beauty that heals, awakens and expands the human body, heart and spirit. My art is both spiritual and practical in that it serves the world by delivering a way to experience the sacred in the every day rituals of our life, in the sanctuaries where we dream, create and collaborate. My art honors our burning desire to express our essence, our soul, our highest purpose.
And what do you have coming up for other creatives who want to tap into flow?
I am excited to share with you and your art-committed readers, my new offering: Winter DreamSpace Circle, a six-week class starting January 16, 2012. I have created a virtual sacred flow circle around dreamtime and intentional community, leading a small community of women in the exploration of the fluid realm of dreams to harvest their messages, their wisdom, their inner knowing. You can take this online class alone or together with a space revolution session to turn your bedroom into a sanctuary that cradles your emerging dreams.
